X-men from Genesis

After reading this passage, I immediately started to look for some commentary or some word from someone else about who the "sons of God" were. In my mind, I guess I have always heard that they were angels or some other being that intermarried with humans and bred some type of superman, half-angel and half-man. My flesh really wants to read about that - X-men from Genesis! The bible even gives us a cool name for them - Nephilim! The truth is that I'm not sure if the sons of God referred to here were angels or of the lineage of Seth or whatever. I don't think too many other people are sure of this either.

So, what do I know? I know that godly people were being seduced by something other than God and that is a story that I can really relate to. I have the best intentions to be a man after God's own heart. I sincerely want to gaze on Jesus and Him alone for my strength and my sustenance in this life. I pray to be thirsty and to be hungry for more of Christ in me, more of His spirit's calling and control. But...there are very attractive things clamoring for my time, my energy, my adoration. You wouldn't mistake them for gods, but they are very much idols, seducing the eyes of my heart away from its one true love.

Were the "sons of God" referred to in this passage angels? I don't know. However, I think the Spirit is teaching me that it is ok that I don't know all the details. That is not why this story is here. I am not always meant to know the science of Nephilim or a world-wide flood or a created universe. Maybe the stories are there not for us to know how God did it, but for us to learn how to trust Him. In that case, Genesis 6:2 is a better story than any X-men comic for although it does not show me all the facts, it shows me truth, the truth my fallen nature.

Prayer - O God, help me not be seduced by the siren songs of unholy things. May I rest in your Spirit firmly and always. Amen.
