Changing our taste
36 Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”
A new wineskin is not attractive by those that need immediate results. Jesus points out the obvious when it comes to "wine taste." He says in verse 39: "...no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, 'The old is better.'" Yeah, Jesus was using a modern parallel to express a reality of the kingdom of God. It was described by John in his gospel that "the word became flesh" but few recognized the moment they were in.
Today, God is pushing the envelope when it comes to our wineskins. It is so hard to get people to desire the new things God is doing in the earth today because they are very comfortable with the taste of the old wine. I like church to look, feel, and taste like this. If it isn't like that then I'm leaving, complaining, or resisting the new wineskin. Yet, without new wineskins there would be no preparation for new wine. The wine would run out. Maybe we are running out of wine in the old wineskin. Does it have holes in it? Have we tried to patch it only to find that our patch has made the hole worse? What will it take for us to abandon the old for the fresh taste of the new wine?
