Go and Sin No More

John 8: 7 When they continued to ask Jesus their question, he raised up and said, “Anyone here who has never sinned can throw the first stone at her.”8 Then Jesus bent over again and wrote on the ground.9 Those who heard Jesus began to leave one by one, first the older men and then the others. Jesus was left there alone with the woman standing before him.10 Jesus raised up again and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one judged you guilty?”11 She answered, “No one, sir.”Then Jesus said, “I also don’t judge you guilty. You may go now, but don’t sin anymore.”]

These men were ready to stone the woman who was caught in adultery. Jesus tells them that if they are without sin then “fire away.” They all dropped their stones and left because they knew they weren’t without sin. This woman who was a few stone’s throws away from being killed had to be appreciative of Jesus saving her life. How is she to show her appreciation to Jesus? Jesus tells her that she is free to go but to sin no more.

I know that I need to be very careful when it comes to judging others. The same measure that I use on others will come back to judge me. However, there should be a difference in behavior from one who has experienced Christ’s forgiveness. Is my behavior different now than from before I became a Christian? I would say yes, but I know that there is always a need for constant evaluation.

Lord Jesus, help me to not hold anyone to a different standard than I am not living out myself. Please help me to have your compassion and discernment when dealing with others and help me to evaluate myself so that You are glorified in my life.
