Contrary to popular belief, I think that there is never a battle God expects us to just stand by and let him do all the work... I can't think of one example where God wrought a great victory without the involvement of his chosen people. Even the celebrated battle of Jericho required that the people of Israel fight. Given, It wasn't much of a fight; mostly a mop-up operation since the walls of Jericho were in shambles, probably along with most of Jericho's best fighters. However, it was a fight and Israel had to do their part.
My point is that God gives us strength to fight and the weapons to fight with (the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God). But then he expects us to fight. A weapon is useless unless you wield it.
I take that back, I can think of one time Israel didn't have to fight. When they were under siege and the footsteps of four lepers were magnified by God to scare away the encroaching army. Even then, God used the actions of people...
King David was no stranger to the concept of fighting for God's cause. This passage really stood out to me. There are many references to David being given strength and weapons to fight with. And then he recognizes that it's God that gave him the victory. "... you have subdued my enemies under MY feet".
We can't expect to live in victory if we're not prepared to fight for it.
Joshua was promised that God would give Israel the ground they "tread upon". This literally meant that God would give them the ground they fought for.
Fight the good fight of faith; run the race until the finish. Don't worry about being strong enough or smart enough. Ecclesiastes 9:11 states that "The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong", and Jesus said, "... he who endures to the end shall be saved." (Matthew 24:13)
