Learning from Jesus Lineage

Notice in the geneology of Jesus that three women are mentioned by name. For a Jew, Matthew, to do this is worth noting. The women are Tamar--who bore Judah and son; Ruth--who bore Boaz a son; and Mary--who bore Jesus a son.

Though many observations could be made, one is the commonality these three women had. They each acted in a way that enabled the continuation of God's will--leading the David's throne and the birth, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Tamar, who should have been given Judah's last son, was denied or forgotten about, and acted in a way that kept the lineage of God's choice in effect. Ruth, a Moabitess, acted in a way with such loyalty, commitment and faith that also kept the lineage of God's choice in effect. Note Tamar was acting as a prostitute at the time and Ruth was NOT a "Jew" but married into the family. Both women waited and then acted in a way that God either initiated or accepted (depending on your view of God's soveriengty). Finally, Mary was chosen but accepted God's will that she, as a virgin, would birth Jesus.

It's worth noting because the Lord used women who could have been considered outcast, untouchable, not in the family, too young, not prepared or equipped enough, damaged goods, or insignificant. We, sometimes are or are considered to be just like these women, but the Lord still desires to use us in His will of reconciling mankind to Himself. Just like He recognized these women in the text, the Lord will recognize us--even though our past may be marred and scarred. So, don't be discouraged about your past or even present. Be encouraged about your future. God will give you both the will and the power to do His will (Philippians 2:12). Learn from this lineage.
