Conditional Faith
In these verses, Jacob has his first real encounter with God. God tells him that He will give him this land he is sleeping on, and that He will be with him, that He will bring him back. And what is Jacob's reaction? IF God is with me, He will be my God, IF God brings me back, IF God does this , IF God does that, IF God....
Is our faith conditional? Do we believe as long as it is convenient? As long as it is not too painful? What happens when the hard times come and God allows a loved one to die? Or a spouse chooses to walk away from a marriage? Or a child chooses a destructive path?
I have been in situations that are extremely painful. They can be life changing events, if you allow God to change your heart. I didn’t like going through those situations, but I would not trade them for anything because of the work that God was able to do in me. He taught me to truly trust Him, above all.
Our faith in God cannot be based on circumstances. We must choose to trust God even when it doesn’t make sense to do so. We tend to bring God down to our level, when in reality He is so far above us. He is the Creator and is not constrained by His creation, but we are. Don’t put God in a box. His ways are not our ways, and I think in the end we’ll all be glad they’re not!
