Hello everyone. I posed the question to my Facebook friends and family on “What is the Lord’s Prayer” about an hour ago. I would like to thank Liz for having the courage to answer the question first and her answer contained Scripture from three different years, but yet it was incorrect. Next I would like to thank my pastors Dennis and Colleen Rouse for standing in God’s pulpit as Holy Spirit led pastors. Pastor Dennis (or Pastor D as we call him) always tell his congregation to always challenge what he says by going to the word and test to see if he is correct. He always tell us to go home and “get the meat” for ourselves. Thank u Pastor D and C. Know that I will always love yall for that.
Now this is the wisdom that the Lord gave me about 11 years ago when I first converted from a Muslim (one who submits to the will of God – that’s what the word Muslim means) to a Christian (one who follows the Savior Jesus and submit to thewill of the God of Abraham). As I was reading my Bible, I came across a profound and wonderful scripture – Proverbs 3.5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on to your own understanding.
From that day, I decided I would not crack the spine on my Bible until I first prayed. And that prayer has been;
Father, I come to You in Jesus Name and I ask for Your knowledge, understanding, guidance, counsel, and wisdom through the Holy Spirit that was imparted to those given the order to pen Your Word for us to follow. I prayed and thank You for it right now in Jesus Name. Amen and Amen
Once I prayed, then I read the scriptures. Now back to the question, “Can anyone tell me the Lord’s Prayer?”
A lot of people will immediately answer Matthew 6.9-13. But I’m here to tell you; no that’s not it. First let me tell you why and then I’ll give you the answer.
If we would read the Bible for what it says and not what we think it is, we would be further into our relationship with the Lord and the Bride of Christ would be better prepared.
First, if we would go back a few verses and read, we would realize that Matthew 6.9 – 13 is an example of how we should pray. Starting in verse 5 of the 6th chapter of Matthew, you will see where Jesus tells us how not to pray. Verse 6 tells us where to pray. Verse 7 tells us not to use vain repetitions (even though this is a wonderful and powerful prayer, its being repeated in vain). How many of yall are really ready for the Lord to come back today? Are we really prepared and ready? Verse 8 tells us not to be like them, and that our Father knows what we need before we even ask. But the ironic part is people start quoting verse 9 like this: Our Father in Heaven, but yet overlook that one little line that begins verse 9. In this manner, therefore pray:
Matthew 6. 9- 13 is the model in which we should pray when we pray to our Father. So let’s break it down till it can’t be broke no more (quoted from the movie, Love Jones).
1. Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. We must first and foremost acknowledge God and give Him reverence in Who He is.
2. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Next we need to pray for the will of God to be done in the earthly realm as it is in heaven, regardless of what that may be. I sometime get specific in what part of the will of God I would like to be done, but that statement is ok and good.
3. Give us this day our daily bread. To me and I said to me, our daily bread could be anything. Peace, wisdom, patience, or whatever we need in our life that will feed our spirits and souls.
4. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespassed against us (some version say debts and debtors). Either way you owe someone something. I owe repentance and an apology to God for all that I have done, knowingly and unknowingly. This is the part where I get to repenting (yes people that’s Ebonics).
5. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. We know as children of the Most High God we will be tested on a daily basis in our daily walk with the Lord. Some may be stronger than other, but either way we will be tested. So we should pray for those things that have a stronghold or that may be a temptation in lives to be broken with His help. I said His help, because God is not a magician. Some of us get ourselves into a mess then get to begging Him to take us out. Sorry but God didn’t put you into your sin and mess, but He will help (give you the grace, mercy, and strength) to get out of it. We should be praying for our deliverance from the temptation. Everyone knows what their sin is and how they got into it.
6. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. Once again we must give God the glory in praise, song, or words from the heart when we finish.
Even if you read your Bible, the title for that subject is titled, “The Model Prayer”, but yet a lot of people assume it’s the Lord’s Prayer cause Grandma and momma said so.
Now let’s get to the Lord’s Prayer. Everyone please get your Bible and turn to John 17. The whole chapter is Jesus praying. Verses 1 – 5 are titled “Jesus Prays for Himself”. Verses 6 – 18 is titled “Jesus Prays for His Disciples” and verses 20 – 26 is titled “Jesus Prays for All Believers”.
So once you read it FOR YOURSELF, and ask The FATHER for revelation, then and only then will you know and understand that this is the Lord’s Prayer. This is the only prayer that I have seen the actual words of what the Lord prayed. I could be wrong. In other passages, He went on a mountain by Himself, went away from the disciples, or seperated Himself from the masses and prayed. This is His prayer right before He was betrayed in the Garden.
Thank you and be blessed.
Love yall,
Janet Coleman and the wisdom of God.
