Relationship Rule #2

Do not take the Lord's name in vain. Again I see this almost like a wedding vow. During Moses time, most nations believed in many gods, but would claim one deity as their own. Israel was claiming Jehovah as their God. They were taking his name, just like a bride takes on her husband's name.

God is telling them not to take it in vain. In vain means without real significance, value, or importance; it also means baseless or worthless, ineffectual or unsuccessful. What God is saying is taking the Lord's name is significant and should make a real difference. It is important and should count for something.

As Christians we are taking the name of the Lord. If it doesn't have any real significance or change our lives in a positive way then we shouldn't claim to be Christians. I dare say that we have no right. Being a follower of Christ is serious business. It is not to be taken lightly. The Bible consistently exhorts us to examine our salvation. This has to be one of the criteria.
