A lot of "IFs"

Jacob isn't seeking God. He's an unrepentant liar, running away from an angry brother. And yet... this is the man God chose from before his birth!

Jacob receives a spectacular blessing & promise: not from the mouth of his father Isaac, but from God Himself. Jacob recognizes that God is in that place. He honors God and sets up a stone to mark the place. He renames it. Obviously, this encounter with God had an impact on Jacob.

If only story ended at verse 19!

God's promise to Jacob didn't come with any conditions or expectations. But Jacob's response to God comes with a whole string of IFs! How could this same man who just had such an amazing encounter with God turn around and put conditions on choosing to follow God?
