These verses reveal the attack strategy of the believer's enemy; and, He hasn't changed since. Verse 1 reveals he creates DOUBT when he challenges God's word--just like he did with Eve. Verse 4 reveals he DECEIVES with lies that already touch on our doubt. Remember, Adam and Eve had never seen or experience any kind of death. It required faith to believe death was even possible. Finally, verse 5 reveals the Devil DISTRACTS when he gets us thinking about something other than God's word or when we start thinking about God's word in twisted, abusive, selfish, and deceptive ways. Notice how he tells Eve "you will be like God, knowing good and evil". That had to be tempting. It is very possible she was concerned that she was "missing out". Therefore, the Devil created doubt, distracted her and deceived her into believing a lie.
The biggest revelation about the Devil here is his ultimate lie has not changed. He deceives us into thinking we can be "like God". I'll leave you to consider the difference of being like God verses being like Christ--whose image believers are to be confomed. Almost every non-Christian religion and cult has this basic lie--that humans can become like God.
Be aware of the tactics of our enemy; submit to God and resist the Devil that he may flee (James 4:7b).
