God's Personal Touch
It's at this point in God's work that we see a very personal connection between God and his creation- specifically with man. Up to this point God speaks the various elements and creatures into existence (ex nihilo: of nothing), but now things change. Verse seven tells us that God forms man from the dust of the earth. There is a much more intimate connection to this particular creation. The next verse then describes God's activity in planting, not speaking into existence, a garden in the east; one that He intends to give to man and have interaction with Him there. It is here, that we see for the first time God's full intention to have significant interaction and relationship with man. God prepares a place for the most prized of all His creation to come and meet with and to worship Him. It's interesting that at the beginning of creation God prepares a place for us to meet with Him. Later in the story He gives us instructions for the tabernacle and the temple, that we might prepare a place for Him. Then Jesus promises that He will go and again prepare a place for us, this time for good. What a beautiful dance between the creator and his creation in which each pursues the other!
