Simon the Sorcerer changed his ways. He'd been the top man about town and had got very rich, then along came Philip and Peter. Simon didn't obstruct them, unlike many pagans in other places they would preach. Simon believed, and stopped trying to line his own pocket.
Then he saw Peter giving the greatest gift, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and perhaps his heart lead and he wanted to give this great gift himself?
He offered what he had, what he thought might help - he offered money. But he got a sharp rebuke.
Then he showed his true colours - it would have been easy to take offence, but Simon simply asked forgiveness and prayers to help him. Peter's curse was pretty sharp, but Simon had learnt humility.
I get jealous a lot. I work with highly respected people, I see people asking for my colleagues' prayers, but not mine. I wish I was respected too.
Perhaps this is my lesson, to learn humility because I will go on supporting these great colleagues in spite of how inadequate it makes me feel. Then perhaps my heart will be right with God.
