About 10 years ago my wife and I led our small group through "Everyday Grace," an in-depth study of the 23rd Psalm published by Willow Creek Community Church. One of the exercises is to paraphrase the Psalm as if the opposite were true. Here is what I wrote:
32 Mlasp
I am a sheep with no shepherd, denied even my most basic needs. I shall be forever left wanting.
In the distance I see a lush, green meadow, a crystal-clear lake in its midst. Between me and the meadow is an impassable canyon. On this side the land is barren, the water brackish and putrid.
My throat is parched, my soul is in agony.
I am lost and alone, wandering aimlessly through the Valley of Evil, nauseated by fear.
There is no one to protect me from this perpetual torture.
I am starving and surrounded by the enemy. How I long to be welcomed into the home of a friend, to have even a drop of liquid on my swollen tongue.
Madness and torment are my constant companions. I am completely isolated from everyone and everything I ever loved
.
Forever.
