Your God Box
My LT and I were talking last night about Job and all it's questions and one of my friends leaned over (she was reading ahead, cheater!) and said, "I thought God said it was okay to ask questions and stuff?" in reference to God's speech in chapter 38 which when reading it totally sounds like a reprimand to Job. That made me think.
Later we were talking about our "God box" (the things we believe to know about God and who He is and how He will or won't behave) and Job's friends. This morning as I began to read Chapter 38 it all suddenly clicked for me. Chapter 38 isn't a reprimand to Job necessarily. It's more like God breaking down Job's God box.
God is saying to Job, "Hey! You don't know me! You weren't here when this happened or when that happened so you can't understand all of me or predict my behavior. There is more to me than what you see now or will ever see. All you can do is trust me."
And what's really cool is to think that this is still what Job is all about today! Is there any other book more challenging to our faith? Don't you read Job and want to go...hmmm...that doesn't fit with what I think about God. God is still using the story of Job to blow up our "God box", who says the bible isn't relevant?!
