Are you a Samaritan?
Jesus is engaging the crowd about who he is. They ask if he is a Samaritan and demon-possessed. This might be an ethnic insult implying that Samaritans are or frequently are demon-possessed. But Jesus' response is that he "is not demon-possessed". But it is interesting to me that he does not refute their suggestion that he is a Samaritan. He doesn't confirm or deny. This might indicate how trivial such ethnic or nationalistic labels are in the light of important issues such as "Who is Christ?" Who do we say he is? Do we emphasize earthly labels while neglecting eternal identities? Do we put too much emphasis on ethnic or racial differences?
