Ancient Culture Revealed
I love this part of the bible and passages like it that give us a small but clear view into the culture of the times. Obviously Abraham always is intending to buy this piece of land, and the man he is negotiating with is intending to sell it - but both wants to demonstrate their graciousness and honor.
It's my guess that had Abraham said 'thanks!' when offered the field for free that he would have been seen as a less than honorable man.
I love that the bible is about people - real living breathing human beings. The Bible pulls no punches. It shows even our patriarchs just as they were - warts and all. Fully human!!! I'm so glad the Bible speaks truth and offers us even brief glimpses into the lives of these great men and women who came before us.
