Contrasting Abraham & Lot
In Genesis 19:12 the angels compel Lot to gather his family in preparation for fleeing the city that is about to be destroyed. The angels specifically mention sons-in-law, sons and daughters. Later in the text we read that his sons-in-law thought he was joking and wouldn't join him but his daughters did. But we don't hear anything about his sons.
As I read this I reflected back on Genesis 18:19 where God reflected on the reasons He had chosen Abraham. Chief among them was that Abraham was the kind of man who would direct his children in the ways of the Lord. Obviously Lot was not that kind of man - he did not direct his children in the ways of the Lord, to the extent that his own sons would not heed his correction and missed out on God's salvation.
May we model our lives after Abraham in being the kind of people who direct our children in the ways of the Lord. As difficult as this is at times, it is a high calling.
