But what is light?

God is light (1 John 5). Initially, I translated this as "God is good". As I read the passion and importance of light which John declares which such passion and importance, it struck me that "light" is intended to portray a much deeper meaning than such an overused concept of good. "God is good" is as accurate as saying "fire is warm". Instead, light means so much more.

To begin with, God began creation with light. I doubt I can ever fully appreciate light unless my sight were taken away. Perception, revelation (visual), and sight are all thanks to light. In this way, spiritual light could be easily translated as truth or understanding.

Second, darkness is the absence of light. Only by separating something from light can darkness exist. Darkness cannot be created.

Lastly, light brings energy and life. More than solar energy, lack of light creates vitamin deficiencies and other harmful imbalances to our bodies, such as seasonal disorders found in people living near polar regions of the globe. Plants transform light directly into the energy they use to survive.

Spend a day in complete blackness and discover the essential function of light. In the same way, our spiritual lives are meaningless and worthless without Jesus. My life is sustained in His light. We must remain in His light not only to avoid the dangers that cannot be seen in fatness, but also to bask in His light-giving love which sustains us.
