it is better to be good than to be lucky

4 The lazy man will not plow because of winter;
He will beg during harvest and have nothing.

my teacher said this morning, "it is better to be good than to be lucky"

specifically-- the point she was trying to make is that, often times, college students who enter the job force expect that everyone on a professional level produces A+ work all of the time. in college, our intentions as students should be to put our best foot forward-- on projects, assignments, tests, etc.-- as if we were 'making it happen' in the real world. sometimes we get exhausted, overwhelmed, or lazy, and we don't turn in our best work. we accept a lower grade than the originally-anticipated 'A'.

when this happens, we hardly lose our reputations or referrals for business. our teacher knows how we did, but other than that we convince ourselves that next time we will do a better job and get the better grade. we enter the job force thinking that we will never screw up again, we will always take our work seriously, and that we will prioritize accordingly-- but the same exhaustion, overwhelming stress, or laziness that we sometimes felt in college WILL affect us again as working professionals. she said that sometimes the work produced in the job world is 'B' work, 'C' work, and even 'F' work. people are inconsistent and things happen. that shouldn't change the fact that you should always be striving for that 'A' grade. depending on things such as 'luck' and turning to others for help when you are not producing 'the goods' is unethical and unfair.

it is better to be good than to be lucky. it is better to get YOURSELF where you want to be and to take the time to do it right. it is better to ensure your own happiness through your own willingness. it is better to rely on your hard work, effort, and dedication than that of others, or from a hand in the wind.

sometimes people say things that really catch my attention and i don't know why.
