GRACE

The song of Psalm 44 is very peculiar. The author claims that Israel has not sinned against or been unfaithful towards God. He also blames his misery on God. He claims that God has been unfair. In this he goes too far. It is true that Christ is sovereign. It is true that many times we feel we are the brunt of unwarranted abuse. It is never true that Christ is unjust. He is either just and full of wrath, or He is just and full of mercy. He is never unjust. Even if the psalmist had done nothing to deserve the wrath of God, that should further emphasize the graciousness of God in knowing that Believers have done nothing to warrant the grace of Christ crucified for us. As the psalmist (possibly) did not merit the wrath of God, no one who is in Christ merits His reward, His salvation. Grace, by its nature, is free of a “merit requirement.” If we ever feel like we don’t deserve the evil that comes upon us, we should reflect on how much more we don’t deserve the righteousness of Christ that has also come upon us.
