A contrarian viewpoint on the tithe

A lot of churches really push the mandatory 10% tithe of your gross income, but is it biblical, or something pushed by churches desperate for your money? This article maintains that the Old Testament tithe no longer applies to the New Testament church, and provides detailed scriptural background as to why. It instead outlines a New Testament approach to giving based on Paul's teaching.

My take here is that the 10% tithe is fine if you wish to take it on as a personal spiritual discipline, but to present it as a curse/blessing choice from the pulpit is wrong. It's sort of like those who feel that abstinence from alcohol is spiritually beneficial. That's fine, but don't try to tell me that there's anything wrong with consuming alcohol when Jesus made wine from water and offered it to his apostles at the Last Supper.
