The old passing

I know in the bible it says the old thing pass and the new is created through christ and faith, but can't those old things come back and haunt you. I know God throws them away yet we still feel the residue of those old things, of our old life. So is God really making us new or is it like a skin covering the new, yet we can still feel our old life in weakness?
