Community
It occurred to me as I read the laws outlined in Exodus 21 and 22 that God is showing the Israelites how to live in community. They had been slaves in Egypt for over 400 years, with no rights or freedom. Suddenly, they are freed and led into the wilderness with very little to guide their actions. So God gives them commandments to live by, not to oppress them, but to provide proper boundaries that from within they could safely live and thrive.
