Egypt's Attitude Greatly differs between Joseph and Moses' time

How different the attitude of the Egyptians was towards the people of Israel in Joseph and Jacobo's time as opposed to Moses' time. Here we see:

"So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh's officials accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt"

During the time of Moses the people of Israel were slaves, or as modern archeologists now believe lowly paid workers - who were treated worse than a slave. Wage slaves do not have to be cared for or fed, they are paid wages and if one falls ill or dies, there is another to replace them.

I have read that the 'captivity' of the Jewish people in Egypt lasted aprox. 430 years. What happened during that time? That is only ~ 17 generations. It's just astounding how a people that were held in such high regard became seen as the lowest of the low.
