Even Then
I’ve always wondered about the day to day life of the first disciples. Maybe it’s just my context* speaking. You know, what were the day to day things that they did…was it all just sitting around singing whatever the popular Hillsong song was at the time? We’ve got the big 4 that we read a couple days ago: apostle’s teaching, fellowship, eating & prayer but what was the ‘feeling’? In Acts 6 we find that things weren’t all perfect. It says that one set of converts was mad at another set of converts because they were skimping on taking care of their widows (Acts 6:1). So these folks do what anybody would do, they complain to someone else! “Peter, they’re not taking care of my people the way I want them to” (said in a very whinny voice).
It would have been easy for Peter to tell the one group to make sure everyone got treated fairly but that would have started a mentality in the church that we struggle with! The apostles told them you. You work it out! Not me, you! We’re all in this together and this isn’t something that you come to to ‘get’ all the time. You’ve got to give!
To put this in our terms, the apostles told them to “BE” the Church. Pick some folks around you who are qualified and filled and gifted and put them to work! We’ve got enough stuff to do, we don’t need to worry about your junk also! BE the Church!
So here’s my app. for today: Be the Church! If you see a need among you meet it! Don’t wait for a professional to do it. If you’re filled and present then you’re able to meet it! Do it! quit slacking off!
*context is from the ‘Strengths Finders’ Book. If you want in sight into how God made you and your leadership style I suggest you pick one up and take the quiz. very cool.
