Upbringing - What weight does it hold?

"Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don't just say to each other, `We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.' That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones"

This is a little bit of what John says to the crowds coming to get baptized.
I find it challenging and shaking, if we really take a deep look at our own lives. It doesn't really matter what we say, or where we're raised from. It's totally driven from a personal choice. What WE choose to do with our lives. Living it out, ACTION.
I think this is a easy trap to fall into. So often we feel "superior" because we were "brought up" the "right" way. I'm beginning to believe this is actually a paradox in itself. We think we have the best upbringing, but our society's way of living really just encourages and develops a routine for faith, which makes it SO hard to really connect at a heart level. I just find it fascinating that John calls out the people who are coming to get baptized.

How often do we ourselves need to get this type of call our, or do we need to call our friends and family and church out? To stop living in the illusion that we somehow are in the clear because of how we were raised?
