He recieved the spear and bore our judgement

Glancing up from my reading of John 6:15-21 in my office I can view a painting on the wall of Jesus walking on water and rescuing Peter with 11 fearful disciples in the boat just behind a ferocious wave. Jesus had just finished his fourth of the seven signs, the feeding of the multitude, as recorded by John. Why did he go up into the mountain to pray and why was he walking on the water? Everything he did or said was only as the Father had directed him and He was on a mission for you and I. The crowd had wanted to take this food creating miracle-healing man and make Him their king by force probably in hopes of overthrowing the current Roman government. They wanted Jesus to bring the spear and bring the judgment against their oppressors to save them. But he was standing on that water following the will of the Father knowing nothing short of his own death burial and resurrection could ever save them or us. He moved Himself and His disciples away from the temptations of the will of men keeping His focus on the will of the Father. I love how Edmund P. Clowney put it: ‘he would go to Jerusalem not to wield the spear and bring the judgment, but to receive the spear thrust and bear the judgment.’ As we continue to read this book of John together keep your eye on the Man and drink in his every word and movement for it was all accomplished not only for those in the past and His present but for you and I as well.
