When I read these verses at first on this beautiful Sunday morning, I quickly glossed over it. Of course! How many times have we been told to keep the Sabbath and to rest on the Sabbath. It's been beat into us over and over and must I say, as a college student, I see it as impractical--I've got homework to finish, playing to be done, and I'll read the Word, but honor the Sabbath? Seems like a thing of the past.
However, I got snowed in and was asked to host a mini-service at my apartment. I revisited this passage. Exactly what is God saying here? In a fast-paced world with the Internet at our fingertips, we never slow down and simply rest. We are always trying to do something, having to get somewhere, and constantly filling our minds with thoughts, worries, and music. What I think we miss is that God calls us to rest in Him. We will never truly know what it means to rest in Him til heaven, but we need to honor the Sabbath to help remind us. To remind us that church events and religion is not busyness. It's not another task or stress to be added. But rather, God IS the reward and He IS the rest that we seek. Too often church is seen as another chore--a task in a list of things to do. God seems like another friend that we are obliged to keep a relationship with in order to reap the rewards of the friendship. But NO! God IS the reward. Nothing that He gives can amount to the reward we find in Him (not His blessing). So you see? We miss the whole point when we go about our busy lives. We miss the point that He is the point.
Rest in God. FInd rest my soul. in Him alone.
