Abishag's Importance
Abishag is first mentioned in 1 Kings 1:3 as the virgin brought to David's bed in order to keep him warm. He was old and did not sleep with her. (Because he couldn't? Was this a way to prove that David was still "able" to preform all duties as king?)
That Adonijah would request her as his wife was a signal to Soloman that he still had designs on the throne. As it was custom that only the new king could utilize a deceased king's servants, which she most certainly was.
