God doesn't always do things the way we always have done things!
This is such a sad story. Moses who over and over again is called by God humble and a great leader makes a mistake and has a punishment that seems unfair to probably all who read it.
In chapter 20, Miriam had died and all these people were constantly grumbling/complaining to God so Moses was under incredible amounts of stress. God told him in verse 8 to speak to the rock to command water to come out of it. In verse 11 he struck the rock like God had instructed him to do previously. Because of this God told him in verse 12 he would not get to go to the promise land either.
We are always one mistake away from reaching God's blessings he has for us. Anytime we make a mistake it could be the LAST one we make without suffering a huge consequence. Instead of focusing on that fear though let us instead focus on the GRACE that is offered for the many mistakes we have made.
