Responsibility of Leadership
Aaron's two sons were killed when they burned "strange fire" before the Lord, fire that He did not command in a way that He did not command. God dealt with them severely for disobeying Him, or taking His instructions so lightly, by killing them. (Perhaps to set a precedent of awe and respect as He did in Acts with Ananias and Sapphira.)
Part of God's reasoning can be seen in what Moses reminded Aaron about, that those selected for leadership carry a higher responsibility. God said he would display His holiness through those who came near Him, that He would display His glory before all the people. Aaron's sons took their responsibility lightly and as such demonstrated they were not worthy of the leadership roles that had been assigned to them.
So many want to be in leadership. But do they understand the weighty responsibility that comes with leadership? Lord, help us whom You've chosen to never take You, Your Word or Your instruction lightly. Help us to understand that You desire to reveal Your holiness through us. Thank You for entrusting us with the Responsibility of Leadership. Please empower us to live up to that calling!
