Not a Measuring stick of Good...
The Pharisees took the law and used it in a complete opposite way than what it was intended. They used the law to show how "good" they were. They tried to abide by its every little dotted i and crossed t. But in reality the law was never intended to be used as measuring stick for how good a person is, it was fully intended to show us how bad we are. The Israelites were given 10 simple rules at first, and they couldn't even follow them. They broke one of them before Moses even came off the mountain to give them the commandments.
Think about it, we don't have laws today to show us how good we are if we don't break them, we only see how bad some people are for breaking them. And what happens if we break them...we get punished. Just like if we break God's laws, we get punished. But unlike the justice system of today where "You do the crime, you do the time!" is enforced, Christ did our time, He took upon himself the death penalty for all!
