The Sin of Doubt
Zacharius asks a question that was born out of pain.
His wife and he had been barren for their whole lives in a culture where child bearing reveals the blessing of God.
The pain of being barren would have been excruciating for this couple.
Zacharius' comment to the angel seems justified to our ears when his condition and past is understood.
When we hear that the angel strikes him dumb for the duration of the pregnancy (over 9 months!) we are in disbelief ourselves. How can this be considered fair? Hasn't he suffered enough, this 'righteous' man?
God's thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Zacharius' lack of faith despite his righteous life needed to be addressed.
