Athlete of the Word
We are to be athletes of the Word according to Paul. We are to train ourselves in righteousness and in the Scriptures. I believe that at this time Paul was in Greece and watched the athletes train for the olympic games of that time. As it is the Olympics right now we hear about how much training they have to do to compete, what the have to do to keep their body in shape, that they even compete when they are hurt and in pain. I'm reminding of the American skier Lindsay Vonn who won a gold medal even though she has been healing from a bad shin injury. And a sprint skier who fell off the track during a practice one and was injured, yet she still fought hard to race and win...she ended up with bronze!!! The training that they do prepares them to do that, it prepares them for anything.
It reminds me that even in our hardest time, the times when we feel like we can't get up again we have to keep on going. We have to run with enurance and perserverance the race that is set before us. For those times we need to be prepared, we need to know the Scriptures, we need to rely on the Lord to get us through! So that after we have prepared and ran the race tha we can be awarded the reward that is set out for us. And hopefully we all come out in the end with that gold!
