Work to be done
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, "The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields."
I find it amazing when I read this passage. Even then, and in my mind more so now, we have so much "work" to be done, and so few workers. I think of the saying that 10% of people in our communities do 90% of the work. It's funny, but Jesus offers another route here, one we don't take often.
Maybe it's not solely up to us to inform, and track down new people to help, but rather pray to God who at the end of the day is in charge of all of it, and ask for more people that he wants to be called to action. I think, once we've experienced a call on our lives, it just kinda makes sense. It's a difference from being pushed into a situation to work. That's a God thing. So why don't we turn it to God more often?
I think our problem is when we talk about God, we've cut God out of the conversation some times. Crazy isn't it? We talk about religion, community, what God has called us to, but for some reason we think we're making the difference, and forgetting that it takes God working through us.
Anyways just pretty cool passage out of Matthew.
