While I read this text and think on the transcendence of God, it is hard for me to imagine Him caring enough to lay down these rules of warning for His people. In other words, He didn't owe the people anything, yet He actually loves so deeply as to give very clear promises...He leaves nothing to uncertainty. How amazing!
What really struck me beyond that was the contrast He painted. It's as if He said, "Both the good that I will do if you obey me and the punishment I will measure out for disobedience is extreme. Which do you like more?" I mean, when you put them side by side, it's like a no-brainer. Isn't it crazy, though, how time after time, the people chose the disobedience? Just goes along with the fact that we are so utterly depraved, no level of promises for punishment or blessing can keep humanity from sinning against a holy God. That's why Jesus came: to do what we could not do and fulfill the requirement on our behalf. Thank you, Father, for your overwhelming compassion and thank you, My Christ, for loving me enough to walk the way of suffering for me!
