The ark was an earthly reflection of God's heavenly throne. Inside the ark was the testimony that God had committed himself to his people and they to him. A marriage certificate if you will. Covering the ark was the Mercy seat. Mercy is God withholding that which we deserve

Death is separation. Separation from our body, and separation from God. That is what we deserve. That is what the people of Israel deserved. And that is what Moses deserved. But God withheld this punishment, this act of justice every time he met with Moses. Why? Because his throne is a throne of mercy, and because of the testimony held within the ark.

Grace is giving us what we don't deserve. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son" Christ was the Grace of God. His sacrifice met the righteous and just punishment that belonged to us. Hallelujah.
