It's All Greek To Me
Ok, before I start I just wanted to say that I am not a greek scholar, nor do I play one on TV. I was just very blessed to sit with Pastor Wayne Barber who taught me HEAPS about Greek and the word of God. I also have a couple really cool resources that help in this: The Complete Word Study, New Testament by Spiros Zodhiates. Notice the name! He’s Greek. Dr Zodhiates passed away last year, he was the founder of AMG and, literally, wrote the book on Greek word study.
This isn’t deep, nor does it make me more spiritual than anyone else. I only use the word ‘deep’ in context to relationships, not knowledge because the depth of knowledge is subjective and you can know all the greek words you want to and still not know Jesus from a hole in the ground. I just like this and it brings the original text to life, for me!
All that to tell you guys about 1 word today! Life! In Mark 3 Jesus heals a man with a cripple hand while in the synagogue and on the Sabbath. He’s angry at the Pharisees for their actions but he doesn’t take it out on them he ‘brings about the righteousness of God’ by healing the man and forgiving him his sins. During that exchange he asks the Pharisees a questions. Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? Mark 3:4
Here goes: life is not life. Well, let me put it this way, it’s not only physical. It’s the Greek word ‘psuche’ which really means everything! All the Material and Immaterial things that make up you and me. Our body (flesh, bones, organs etc…), soul (personality, awareness, desires, etc…) and spirit (what we have that connects us to God).
I see why Jesus was angry at the Pharisees. They weren’t just stopping him from getting physical healing but they were killing the psuche of these people! They were killing their body, their souls, and, can you believe it, they were killing the part of these people that connects with God!
So what about you? With the people in your life, the people that you lead, the kids or students or adults that look up to you, are you trying to let their psuche thrive or are you killing it?
