Focused to Do Things Well
Scripture: Mark 7:37
People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Observation:
Everywhere Jesus went, when people recognized him, crowds formed to hear his teaching and to be healed. In this text, Jesus heals a deaf and mute man - his ears were opened and his tongue was loosened.
The people of the Decapolis where this happened were amazed. They had heard about Jesus working miracles; that’s why they brought this man to him. But now, they had seen it first hand and were amazed.
“He has done everything well,” they said.
Application:
God’s character is one of excellence. When He reflected on creation, He saw that it was good. As God in the flesh, Jesus also reflected excellence. Everything He did, everywhere He went, was good.
Do I have the same focus on doing things well? I confess to being somewhat of a perfectionist. With so many items on my to-do list, can I do all things well? My messy desk would suggest otherwise, as much as that messiness drives me crazy!
When Jesus travelled and crowds formed, His focus was specific and priorities clear: to teach, heal and restore them to relationship with God. He didn’t allow Himself to be distracted, even when they tried to anoint Him as their political leader. He even set aside relaxation time with His disciples because their needs were so great.
If Jesus didn’t try to do everything, how can I? I need to be more focused on what is important, and what I have been created and gifted to do, so I can do those things well. When I do this, and team with others doing the same, the results are awesome and the experience invigorating. Seek first His Kingdom, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to keep my focus on what You have called and gifted me to do. I do want to do those things well. Give me the discernment to identify the things that aren’t important or are not for me to do, and the courage to set them aside to seek your kingdom and your righteousness.
