John 1, Learning about John the Baptizer
Reading John 1 today I realized how much it teaches us about John. Of course when first read we're all anticipating Jesus' arrival and his baptism but look at it again and think about John. This reveals a lot about him. He had been baptizing at this place for awhile, enough that everyone knew where to find him. He'd kind of made a name for himself in this area. Not for himself did his popularity grow but because he awaited The One who was to come after him. He declared his purpose openly. He declared that he was not The One. Undoubtably this probably cause others to return to John with the same anticipation. What a day! The day that Jesus showed up to be baptized must of been amazing. I don't know how John functioned. I would of been speechless. When it was all over I wonder if John thought it was some kind of dream. How did he stay focused and continue to baptize after encountering The One, Jesus Christ. What a tremendous calling on one's life! John was truly a unique individual with such a conviction to his Lord.
