Critic Beware

Critics Beware

Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
James 4:11

From experience, we know that it is easier to criticize than to correct; we understand that it is easier to find faults than solutions; and we realize that excessive criticism is usually destructive, not productive. Yet the urge to criticize others remains a powerful temptation for most of us.

In the book of James, we are issued a clear warning: “Don’t criticize one another, brothers” (4:11). Undoubtedly, James understood the paralyzing power of chronic negativity, and so should we.
Negativity is highly contagious: we give to others who, in turn, give it back to us. This cycle can be broken by positive thoughts, heartfelt prayers, and encouraging words. As thoughtful servants of a loving God, we can use the transforming power of Christ’s love to break the chains of negativity. And we should.

“When something robs you of your peace of mind, ask yourself if it is worth the energy you are expending on it. If not, then put it out of your mind in an act of discipline. Every time the thought of “it” returns, refuse it."
Kay Arthur

Today’s Prayer

Father God, Help me, oh Lord to rise above the need to criticize others. Help me to be honest with myself and open blinded eyes to this stumbling block. Lord God may my own shortcomings humble me, and may I always be a source of genuine encouragement to my family and friends. Allow me to be a stepping stone in the lives of others I encounter instead of being a hindrance and keep me from belittling others to get ahead. Show me my insecurities and give me wisdom to speak when needed. Let my words be acceptable in thy sight and pleasing to your ears. We thank you in advance for all Glory belongs to YOU! In Jesus mighty name, Amen.

Be Blessed!
