Sarcastic Doubt
Doubtless the money bag Judas carried could not compensate to buy food for 5,000 men and their wives, moms, and children. As such, their words within the context imply sarcasm! Indeed, it seems the disciples not only express faithlessness in this moment but also a smirking jab of sarcasm. The disciples had seen Jesus solve loads of dilemmas with miraculous acts. If they weren't being sarcastic here, was this just a pure moment of stupidity, thinking they could make such a purchase? Such absentmindedness doesn't seem possible for they were all vagrants with Jesus. "Foxes have holes...but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head," Jesus enlightened the man who wanted to follow him. Surely their little bag of money would fall short of covering the mass's hunger. Surely they were not implying Jesus make money out of thin air, for their doubt is apparent: "We have no more than...." Yes, their doubt had at least a smidgen of quip if not more.
How often does my doubt come with tones of sarcasm?
Whatever our tone in moments of doubt, our loving Father feeds us.
