Some Thoughts On Eternal Security

In my daily Bible reading yesterday I read Romans 11, and was jolted by these verses:

21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

I say jolted because we've had some discussion with some folks at my church lately about eternal security. It's a tough topic, and one that is ill defined by most who argue it.

Just so you'll know - I don't believe you can lose your salvation like you can lose your wallet. But I do believe you can give it back, because I believe in free will and don't think God is going to drag anyone kicking and screaming into heaven if they don't want to go.

It's verses like those above which strengthen my belief in what you could call "limited eternal security." If the Calvinists and other "unlimited" eternal security people are right, Paul would have never even written those words.

I'm sure they can be explained away - what can't? But that's not the point. The point is Paul clearly thought there was a possibility - however small and unlikely it might be - that those who had been grafted in could be kicked out!

Thus they would "lose" their salvation.

Think about it.
