Doing Good

Many scriptures are developed to demonstrate the results of the good and the bad. I am also reading in Deuteronomy where Moses is describing what will happen to those who follow good and what will happen to those who follow evil. Much instruction is given there around Chapters 27-29.

This particular verse is the condensed version. First the bad and then the good. I love the instruction for doing good...
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

It demonstrates that the gospel is "a doing thing". So often I hear the focus of preaching on the first part of this section. But the second holds more meaning for me. This is another installment in the concept of "How Then Shall We Live". (That was a title of a book that was so philosophical that I didn't get much practical out of it.) This section of scripture is clear and concise. As we have the ability we should bless those around us especially those of the faith. We should not grow weary in doing good.

I along with everyone else who is reading this has the ability in their current circumstances of blessing others. It's often so simple. A gracious smile. A "good morning". A "how-de-do". The little signs of love in our lives. How often do we let discouraging circumstances steal the joy of doing good to others.

We have special elderly friends in our lives. In the last few weeks my wife and I watched one under severe circumstances exude joy and love and peace to everyone she encountered. If you met her outside of the circumstances she was under, she would have encouraged you, prayed for you and put a smile on your face. She would have left without a hint of the suffering going on in her heart. I had the opportunity to sing praises to the Lord with this woman in the circumstances that she was under and it was an amazing thing to be blessed by her spirit and the Holy Spirit in her mature knowledge of Christ.

I do not want to grow weary of doing good even in the worst circumstances. I want to continue to encourage the body of Christ with everything that I can do.

Lord help me to learn to encourage others around me especially those of the faith. Let me have a good countenance. Let the joy come from my heart and let it be sincere. Give me that type of faith dear Lord. Let my life reflect the extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit. Let my hand be willing to hand out blessing after blessing from a well that will never run dry. Let these blessing comes from the depths of my spirit and my heart. Not just my finances.

Thank you Lord that you reveal these things to us your children. Thank you that you love us so much to teach us and encourage us in doing good. You are such a good helper and teacher in our lives. We love you Lord.
