In the beginning... of what?
In my life, I've heard numerous thoughts and pontifications about what it means that the earth was "without form and void". I've also heard many speculations and much debate over the meaning of the word "day" in this first chapter of Genesis, and believe me, I have opinions about all that.
I've even heard sermons and teaching about the eternal nature of God and how "time is an Island in the sea of God's eternity".
I've never, however, heard anyone elaborate on the first three words, "In the beginning", and do an exhaustive study on what exactly they mean and what the implications could be, as it relates to the rest.
I'll try to explain what I mean. I believe that "In the beginning" is referring to time. Specifically, it's referring to the very beginning of time. So, in this first verse we have, not only the beginning of the Heavens and the Earth, but also the beginning of time. If you will allow me to borrow a phrase from the TV series Star Trek; what we have in Genesis chapter one, verse one, is the creation of the "Time Space Matter Continuum". It's our three dimensional universe... it's the "reality" we live in.
Now; with that in mind, here's the thought that blows my mind, and it's all in scripture if you just look for it. God created this "reality" and placed us in it, and He didn't just create the beginning, He also created the whole time line and He created the end. Remember? "I AM the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End". God isn't confined inside this "reality" we call time, He's not traveling along through time with us... He's already there, waiting for us in the next second. He is the beginning and the end AND all points in between.
The implications are many, you can contemplate this for days and you'll still not be able to get a firm grip on it. Here are some things to think on...
1. Concerning the "days" of creation; It was God who chose to make our day/night cycle 24 hours. He didn't need that amount of time, or more, or less, to get everything done, in fact, He didn't need time at all, that is only for our benefit, not His. Billions of years with no humans? Give me a break! Humans are the whole point of creation, not some kind of by-product.
2. Light was created on day 1, the sun, moon and stars were created on day 4. Think about it!
3. According to scripture, Jesus clearly did things that were impossible. He didn't create anything new but He manipulated "reality" on a number of occasions. We call those miracles. Walking on water, turning water into wine, healing sick people instantly, making a blind man see, raising the dead, knowing things he couldn't possibly know, etc.
