You, Me & Bobby McGee
I’ve got a few best friends. And in the past I’ve had a few more. In high school my best friend was one of my cousins, Wade. Wade and I got in all sorts of trouble together but, most of the time, we could come up with a quick, witty story that would help us slide out of it. We could practically communicate in glances and facial expressions, that why no one would play us at spades. We would Dominate!!! As much time as Wade and I would spend together he never really knew what I was thinking and I never really knew what he was thinking, all the time anyway.
The only human that knows what goes on in my head is me. You might have a good idea, but chances are you’re not a mind reader and I’ve got a good poker face. The same is true for you. No one knows what you’re thinking except you. You can share and spend heaps of time with someone but in that moment where a new situation arises only you know what is going on behind your eyes and in between your ears. Even God is like that. Here, check it out…
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. That’s from 1 Corinthians 2. The difference between our relationships with each other and our relationship with God is I cannot give someone my spirit. Sound weird? I can spend days and weeks and months and years cultivating a relationship with someone but they still won’t know my thoughts. But God, God has the crazy ability to give us his Spirit. We can walk with it and stay in tune with it. Here, the next verse has it:
We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
God gives us his Spirit so we can understand what he has freely given us. We can understand the heart of God, the salvation of God, the word of God because we have received his Spirit. This is huge for me because anytime I’m stressed or mean or concern for others leaves me I know I can trace it back to the fact that I’m not walking in his Spirit. When I walk in his Spirit the love and joy and peace and patience of God is coming out of me. I can see need and meet it. I understand the heart of God!
Can you tell when you’re walking in his Spirit? Do your actions and thoughts change to reflect God’s actions and thoughts?
