Secret Wisdom

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written:
"No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him"

1 Corinthian 2:6-9

Paul writes about a two types of wisdom in these verses from Corinthians. 'Wisdom of man' and 'Wisdom of the Spirit'.

He speaks of the wisdom of men in their persuasive words. That this type of wisdom is not going to become much of anything. Eloquence and superior wisdom becoming meaningless. He mentions his own testimony of coming before others in fear and trembling. That his strength was only in the demonstration of the power of the God.

He instructs that our knowledge should not rest in man's wisdom but in God's power. He calls this a 'secret' wisdom. That is a fascinating thought: God's wisdom is something not so clearly seen, not so visible and not formulaic. In classes we are presented materials that are well defined and clearly written about. We study, learn and apply. In God's economy it appears more like a hunt for gold. Treasure buried that is only found by the diligent seekers. A secret wisdom.

In my life I have had thoughts and revelation strike me at the oddest times. Many of them are during circumstances that are beyond my control. I wonder "what should I do!?!" Then I get a glimpse of God's answer for me. It's usually simple and straightforward. Much of the time it's that I don't need to say anything or respond in any dramatic way. Often times it just "watch", "pray", "listen".

This might not seem all that 'secret', but it is not my natural reaction. The guidance and comfort I get in following God's answer is felt. It is like simultaneously standing in a strong gust of wind and experiencing a beautiful horizon. There is an affirmation of His presence in the process of choosing what response to take to the circumstances. Not the world's advice. The world’s advice would sound more like "run Forrest, run!" God’s advice is instead, "to stand, and when you've done all you can do to stand, stand."

There are many places in my life where I can let God's way and wisdom be my way. Decisions I make with my time, with the words that come out of my mouth, with my thought life, with my choices for action. How often I make the mistake of choosing the world's choice in these areas, instead of what the Lord would have me do. It's not an easy thing 'doing' this 'secret' wisdom. But the 'doing' is what it's all about. It's not enough to know it or to espouse it, it needs to be demonstrated by action. My words well seasoned with kindness and thoughtfulness. My face displaying a smile and the peace of knowing God. My feet moving at a good and joyful tempo purposeful in their work and direction. My heart drawn to listen and have concern for those in need of prayer.

Lord help us to live in the secret places of Your Spirit. To rest even in the shadow of the valley of death. Your love casting out fear. Thank you for Your blessings in our lives and the favor You have shown us in the search for your secret wisdom. You are so good to us.
