Unmet Expectations

Luke 7:18 John’s followers told him about all these things. He called for two of his followers 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the One who is to come, or should we wait for someone else?”

John was filled with the Holy Spirit from birth. He saw the Holy Spirit come upon Jesus and heard God say, “this is My Son in whom I am well pleased.” John even said, “ I must decrease so that He may increase.” Well decrease is happening but not in the way John wants it to go down. Can you blame him? Prison and beheading is not on my list of ways that I want to go out. What happened to John’s faith in Jesus to ask this question? I think it goes back to unmet expectations. That’s what usually gets me in trouble. Dying to self and my expectations is not on my feel good list. Yet, if I am truly in submission to my Lord it is a necessary part of my walk. I am called to share in His sufferings but what expectation do I have even for that? Hopefully not prison and beheading but whatever it is I need to remember to not put my expectations in a place where it causes me to lose faith.
