Does God Care About My Shoes?

In a recent post I shared an experience that a fellow team member had while in Kenya recently. Following our return to the States, I had to purchase a new pair of dress shoes (because I gave mine to a pastor in Kenya who had only a very worn pair). As I was trying on dress shoes trying to find a comfortable yet inexpensive pair I began to "feel badly" about being so concerned about how comfortable my shoes are while I have pastor-brothers in Kenya with way less to cover and protect their feet. My heart was feeling a combination of pity and guilt while my brain was asking, "Do you really think God cares about your shoes?"

My heart took the challenge my brain proposed and called to mind a verse tucked away in Deuteronomy: During the forty years that I led you through the desert, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet (29:5). The conclusion I came to is that God DOES care about what's on our feet.

My guess is that God doesn't get hung-up on the things we do (cost, color, comfort) unless we get hung-up on those and miss that even our shoes point back to Him.

As I wrestled with the incongruity of me purchasing nice dress shoes while pastor-brothers in Kakamega barely have enough shoe to protect their feet from the sharp rocks and muddy terrain over which they trek to care for their flock, I believe the Spirit prompted me to do something to remember them and to help me remember that even our shoes point back to God's loving provision.

Whaddaya think? Have you ever thought that even your shoes can point to God? How have you worked to remember significant experiences in your life so that they have a lasting impact on who you are? I'd love to hear your stories...
