Romans 8:13

For those of us who have placed our faith in Christ’s sacrifice for our sins on the cross, the penalty of sin was dealt with and destroyed. However, we still have the power of sin to deal with, because sin is still a formidable factor in our lives. If it weren’t, all Christians would lead perfect lives.

So how does it happen? How as believers, how do we get power over, the power of sin?
This text tells us if we live our lives according to our sinful desires, we would risk experiencing a Spiritual death.

We all know it’s eminent that we will face a physical death, but we certainly wouldn’t want a Spiritual death.
Just as Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was needed to free us from the penalty of sin, the Holy Spirit is needed to free us from the power of sin. Hence, it’s written in the text “but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.”

It’s the presence of God’s Spirit in us, when we accepted Christ that supernaturally enables us to overcome sin.

Paul elaborates on this important principle in the Book of Galatians:

“So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful
nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the
Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each
other, so that you do not do what you want.”

(Galatians 5:16-17 NIV)

So many Christians grow weary and defeated because they try to overcome the power of sin on their own. That’s an impossible task. It’s only when we truly cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit, when we seek a fresh filling from Him each day and rely on His resources, that we find power over the power of sin.

The Holy Spirit is to the Christian what the phone booth was to Clark Kent. Just as Clark Kent went into the phone a normal man, but he was transformed and came out of the booth as Super Man, able to overcome his advisory’s. The Holy Spirit transforms us into Saints, with the supernatural strength to overcome sin.

So now we see that “Walking in the Spirit”, is our “Power Over the Power of sin”.
